Owl City - Fireflies - Song Interpretation :)

The fireflies represent the earth at night, at night the world looks like a million fireflies are around it. "You would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies lit up the world as i fell asleep". he's looking at the world at night rotating. this whole song revolves around time and his fear of growing up. he would like to make himself believe that planet earth turns slowly because he believes it moves too fast, as in, life is short. He cherishes his childhood, "Cause id get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs as they tried to teach me how to dance A foxtrot above my head a sockhop beneath my bed a disco ball is just hanging by a thread" all relate to childhood scenes. he also says if he could stay awake forever he would, so he didn't have to miss anything. the music video depicts him at a desk doing work all the while his toys come out and surround the room. this shows that his childhood plays the biggest part of his life. when he talks about his dreams getting bizarre he is referring to life when it gets too hectic so he'll pull out his jar of fireflies which, in this stanza, represent his childhood memories cause they were the ones to teach him how to dance. he is afraid of growing up, like a kid afraid of the dark who needs their door open "just a crack", he needs protection. he knows growing up is important, but thats what scares him.
Everyone faces this fear, i admire this singer to be the first to stand up and say that its ok, your not the only one, everyone is afraid of life at one point in this journey. thats why this site is so great, you can't understand a song until you've experienced it, until you can relate. and my meaning is not going to be the same as anyone else's, its not right, its not wrong, this song like all songs can be interpreted in several ways based on the experiences of the listener. songs have many meanings that can be expressed in many ways, they are the biggest part of our lives.
